ABOUT

Dr Ana Beduschi is a Full Professor of Law with a Personal Chair at the University of Exeter, United Kingdom. She is currently the Director of the research centre Science, Culture and the Law at Exeter (SCuLE).

Prior to that, she was appointed as a Lecturer (2012-2016), Senior Lecturer (2016-2019), and Associate Professor (2019-2022) at the University of Exeter Law School. She held Visiting Research Fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (2017) and the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (University of Geneva) (2019 and 2021-2022).

She has recently led the UKRI ESRC-funded project on COVID-19: Human Rights Implications of Digital Certificates for Health Status Verification. The project investigates whether and how digital certificates for health status verification, also referred to as digital health passports or immunity passports, impact data protection, privacy and human rights. In doing so, it assesses whether there are effective ways to mitigate any potential risks for these rights, thus informing decision-making in this area of vital national interest.

Her research and teaching focus on international human rights law, technology (including Big Data and Artificial Intelligence), digital law, data protection and privacy, and international migration and refugee law. Her recent publications examine the impact of artificial intelligence on human rights protection, the opportunities and challenges presented by digital identity, the implications of Big Data for international migration and human rights law, and the concept of vulnerability for the protection of migrant children’s rights.

She holds a PhD in Law (2011) from the University of Montpellier 1, France. She also received an LLB degree in Law (in 2003), an LLM degree in International and European Law (Maîtrise in 2004), and an LLM degree in European Human Rights Law (Master 2 in 2005) from the University of Montpellier 1, France.
